What an air compressor consists of

  • Compression: The compressor takes in low-pressure, low-temperature refrigerant gas from the evaporator coil located inside the car. It compresses this gas, increasing its temperature and pressure significantly.
  • Heat Exchange: The hot, high-pressure refrigerant gas then moves to the condenser coil located at the front of the vehicle, usually near the radiator. Here, the gas releases heat and condenses into a high-pressure liquid.
  • Expansion Valve: The now low-pressure, low-temperature refrigerant enters the evaporator coil inside the vehicle’s cabin. As warm air from the cabin passes over the cold evaporator coil, the refrigerant absorbs heat from the air, cooling it down. The refrigerant evaporates into a gas again in the process.
  • Exaporation: The high-pressure liquid refrigerant flows from the receiver-dryer through the expansion valve, where it is allowed to expand. This expansion reduces the pressure on the refrigerant, so it can move into the evaporator. The valve senses pressure and regulates the flow of refrigerant, which allows the system to operate steadily, but the moving parts of the valve can wear out and sometimes require replacement.
  • Cycle Repeat: The cycle repeats continuously to maintain the desired temperature inside the vehicle.

In summary, the AC compressor is responsible for pressurizing and circulating the refrigerant throughout the air conditioning system, allowing it to absorb and release heat efficiently, thereby cooling the interior of the vehicle. It’s a critical component for maintaining comfort in hot weather conditions.
