Clutch Thrust Bearing Replacement in Canberra & ACT
If your clutch makes noise, feels rough, or you struggle to shift gears, a worn thrust bearing
(also called a clutch release / throw-out bearing) may be the cause. We diagnose the clutch release system and

What is a Clutch Thrust Bearing?
The thrust (release) bearing sits between the clutch fork (or hydraulic release mechanism) and the pressure plate fingers.
When you press the clutch pedal, the bearing spins under load to disengage the clutch. When it wears, it often makes
squealing/whirring noises and can damage the pressure plate if left too long.
gear crunching, or pressure plate damage.
clutch shows wear, replacing the full clutch kit (clutch plate + pressure plate + thrust bearing) can help you avoid paying
gearbox labour twice. This matches the recommendation already on your current page.
Common Symptoms of a Worn Thrust Bearing
🔊 Noise when pressing the clutch
Squeal, chirp, whirr, or grinding that appears when you depress the pedal.
🎛️ Rough pedal feel
You feel vibration, pulsation, or a “gritty” sensation through the pedal.
🔄 Hard shifting / gear crunch
The clutch may not fully disengage, making gears resist engagement.
⚙️ Engagement changes
The bite point moves or becomes inconsistent as components wear.
🔥 Burning smell
A dragging clutch can overheat when the release system doesn’t operate smoothly.
🚫 Severe cases: won’t disengage
In extreme wear, the bearing can collapse and prevent normal clutch operation.
How We Diagnose & Repair
What we check
- Noise pattern: clutch in vs clutch out
- Pedal feel and engagement point
- Hydraulic system condition (if applicable)
- Signs of clutch slip or dragging
What we recommend
- Replace the thrust bearing when wear/noise confirms failure
- Replace the clutch kit if the clutch shows wear while the gearbox is out
- Inspect related wear parts (spigot bearing, fork/pivot, seals) to reduce repeat labour
Clutch Thrust Bearing FAQs
Quick answers customers ask before booking.
What’s the difference between a thrust bearing and a spigot (pilot) bearing?+
The thrust (release) bearing operates when you press the clutch to disengage it. The spigot (pilot) bearing supports the gearbox input shaft in the crank/flywheel area. They fail differently and create different noise patterns.
Does a noisy thrust bearing always mean I need a full clutch kit?+
Not always. If the clutch still has good life and the pressure plate surface looks healthy, you may only need the bearing. If wear is present, replacing the full kit while the gearbox is out often saves labour later.
Can I keep driving if I hear a squeal when I press the clutch?+
Driving is risky. The noise often gets worse and can damage the pressure plate fingers. If shifting starts to feel difficult, stop driving and book diagnosis.
How long does the repair take?+
Time varies by vehicle and access. The bearing itself is small, but labour increases if gearbox removal is required. We confirm the process during diagnosis and quote accordingly.
Do you warranty the work?+
Yes—our work includes a 12-month / 20,000km warranty on workmanship and supplied parts (where applicable).
