Universal Joints (U-Joints) FAQs
Common U-joint questions: noises, vibrations, whether it’s safe to drive, labour time, and costs (Canberra / ACT)
What are universal joints (U-joints) and what do they do?
A universal joint (U-joint) is a component in the driveshaft that allows power to be transmitted from the
transmission or transfer case to the differential while accommodating suspension movement.
It enables smooth torque transfer even when the driveshaft operates at an angle, commonly found in
rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles.
What are the common signs of a failing U-joint?
- A clunking noise when taking off or shifting gears (more noticeable when shifting between Reverse and Drive)
- Vibrations that increase with vehicle speed (commonly felt between 60–100 km/h)
- Squeaking or chirping noises at low speed (dry or worn needle bearings)
- Red rust dust around the bearing caps or damaged seals
- Noticeable play or looseness when twisting the driveshaft by hand
Is it safe to drive with a bad U-joint?
⚠️ It is not recommended.
A severely worn U-joint can fail suddenly. If it breaks, the driveshaft may drop and strike the underbody,
exhaust, transmission, or transfer case, potentially causing loss of control or complete vehicle immobilisation.
If you notice heavy vibration, repeated clunking noises, or excessive play, the vehicle should be inspected as soon as possible.
How long does U-joint replacement take? Do I need driveshaft balancing?
Many vehicles can be completed within 1–2 hours, depending on access, corrosion, and vehicle design.
- In most cases, replacing a U-joint alone does not require driveshaft balancing if it is reinstalled correctly
- If the driveshaft is bent, missing balance weights, or vibration remains after replacement, balancing may be required
- Incorrect driveshaft phasing or alignment can also cause vibration, even with new U-joints installed
How much does U-joint replacement cost in Canberra?
Pricing depends on the number of U-joints, vehicle type (RWD or 4WD), accessibility, and whether the centre bearing
or driveshaft requires additional repair.
Typical costs often fall within a broad range of $250–$650+.
We will inspect the vehicle first and provide a clear quote before any work begins.
