What is checked during an A/C service?
Good air conditioning depends on both cooling and airflow. An A/C service considers how the system is operating and what attention it needs. The scope varies with the vehicle and symptoms, but general service checks can include:
- Airflow through the vents: checking for restrictions, including the condition of the cabin filter.
- Cooling performance: assessing temperatures and system pressures alongside the operation of the compressor, fans and controls.
- Hoses and connections: inspecting accessible components for damage and signs of leakage, with further leak testing where needed.
- Refrigerant condition and charge: determining whether refrigerant servicing is required, using the refrigerant and quantity specified for the vehicle.
Warm air and weak airflow need different checks
Air that blows strongly but stays warm is a different symptom from very little air coming through the vents. A restricted filter can affect airflow, while poor cooling may require checks of the refrigerant circuit, controls or other components. The symptoms help guide diagnosis; they do not, on their own, prove that the system needs a regas.
When is a regas appropriate?
Recharging is part of refrigerant service when it is needed. Proper servicing follows the manufacturer’s procedures for recovery, evacuation and recharging. A leak or other fault needs attention rather than repeated top-ups, and the system’s operation should be checked after the work.
