Starter Motor Replacement

What Is A Starter Motor Replacement

Before the advent of the starter motor, various methods were used to start engines, including wind-up springs, gunpowder cylinders, and human-powered techniques like a removable crank handle that engaged the front of the crankshaft, pulling on an airplane propeller or pulling a cord wound around an open-face pulley. The hand-crank method was commonly used but was inconvenient, difficult, and dangerous. Engine behavior during starting could be unpredictable, with the engine potentially kicking back and causing sudden reverse rotation. Many manual starters included a one-directional slip or release feature so that once engine rotation began, the starter would disengage. However, in the event of a kickback, the reverse rotation of the engine could suddenly engage the starter, causing the crank to unexpectedly and violently jerk, possibly injuring the operator. This led to the invention of electric starters.

The starter motor is an electric motor that turns over or “cranks” the engine to start. It includes a powerful motor and an attached starter solenoid. When you turn the ignition key to the START position or press the START button, the battery voltage flows through the starter control circuit, activating the starter solenoid if the transmission is in Park or Neutral. The starter solenoid then powers the starter motor and pushes the starter gear forward to mesh with the engine flywheel, which is connected to the engine crankshaft. The starter motor spins the engine crankshaft, allowing the engine to start. In cars with push-button start, the system disengages the starter as soon as the engine begins running. At Advanced Mobile Mechanics, we handle starter motors daily for all makes and models. Suppose you suspect your car needs a new starter motor. In that case, our expert mobile mechanics will come to any location in the Canberra region to diagnose the problem or even replace the starter motor for you.

When Do You Need A New Starter Motor

When starting a car with a fully charged battery, you might hear a single click or nothing at all, with the starter motor failing to run despite 12-volt power at the starter control terminal. Another symptom occurs when the starter motor runs but fails to turn over the engine, often causing a loud screeching noise during startup. Damaged teeth on the flywheel’s ring gear could also cause this issue. If your vehicle shows these symptoms, call Advanced Mobile Mechanics—they’ll sort it out quickly!

How Much Does It Cost For A New Starter Motor Replacement

The average cost for a new starter motor can range from $250- as much as $800.These estimates vary dramatically depending on the particular issue and your vehicle’s make, model, and year. Many vehicles have a starter that is easily accessible and can be removed and replaced in under an hour – others are far more complicated as they can be housed in other engine components – like underneath the intake manifold. During starter motor replacement, you may also require some extra parts, including the battery, battery wire looms, earth straps, etc.
