What is an evaporator?
An evaporator is a key component in refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Its primary function is to absorb heat from the space being cooled or from a substance being cooled (such as food in a refrigerator) and transfer that heat to the refrigerant circulating within the system. This absorption of heat causes the refrigerant to evaporate, hence the name “evaporator.”
How does an evaporator work?
- Heat Absorption: The evaporator is typically located indoors in an air conditioning system or inside the refrigerator compartment in a refrigerator. It contains coils or tubing through which the cold refrigerant flows. As warm air from the space passes over these coils or tubing, the heat from the air is absorbed by the refrigerant, causing it to evaporate.
- Cooling Effect: As the refrigerant evaporates, it absorbs heat energy from the surrounding air or substances, effectively cooling them down. This is why the air blown into a room by an air conditioner feels cool.
- Low Pressure, Low Temperature: The evaporator operates at a low pressure compared to the rest of the refrigeration cycle, which helps to lower the boiling point of the refrigerant. This allows the refrigerant to absorb heat efficiently from the surrounding air or substances, even at relatively low temperatures.
- Refrigerant State Change: The refrigerant enters the evaporator as a liquid and exits as a low-pressure vapor. This vapor is then compressed by the compressor in the next stage of the refrigeration cycle, raising its temperature and pressure before it enters the condenser.
